Chris was born Oct 6, 2009. He was born with a severe case of jaundice called hyperbilirubinenima. He was born with gallstones and a double lung infection. Chris’ liver was not working properly.
He went to several different doctors trying to find out what was making him so sick. On January 7, 2011, after being hospitalized 4 times for being sick since his body cannot absorb the nutrients it needs from food and vitamins, he was diagnosed with a rare liver disease called Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency. There are three different types and Chris just so happens to have the most severe form called ZZ phenotype, which means that he produces very little alpha-1 antitrypsin.
Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, also known as A1AD, is an inherited disorder that may cause lung disease and liver disease. Alpha-1 Antitrypsin is a condition in which the body does not make enough of a protein that protects the lungs and liver from damage.
Currently, only Chris’ liver has been affected, but the disease will develop in his lungs when he gets into his late teenage years. He will have a chance of developing another liver disease called cirrhosis and another lung disease call COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). His immune system is weak and he gets easily sick as a result. He will always have the possibility of needing both a liver and lung transplant to replace his impaired organs.
Chris also has what is called a sensory processing disorder (SPD). Sensory processing is a term that refers to the way the nervous system receives messages from the senses and turns them into appropriate motor and behavioral responses. Sensory Processing Disorder is a condition that exists when sensory signals don’t get organized into appropriate responses. It is like he has a “traffic jam” in his brain.
Chris has several other problems that have not been diagnosed yet. He has had an enlarged spleen for a month now and this is causing him pain inside his tummy. Chris is on a very special diet where he cannot eat fun things like bread or pizza, or candy or drink things like milk or even juices.
His family and community are rallying around Chris not only to support his physical struggles but also the financial struggles. They have decided to run an online fundraiser to let people help by giving as much or as little as they like. You can support the fundraiser by shopping around the Mixed Bag Designs store, and at checkout after adding your payment information, add the ID# 143780 on the “Review/Submit Order” page.
