Reusable bags are great for adding some style to your errands with the added plus that they’re good for the environment! The one thing every consumer should be aware of with reusable bags is how to properly take care and clean them. Reusable bags can be home to a lot of unwelcome bacteria – stuff you definitely don’t want near your produce or recent shopping splurges! Not too worry – it’s an easy fix. Just use these simple tricks to keep your reusable bags clean and ready when you are for your next farmers market!
1. Meat in one bag – produce in the other! Separate your meat and produce and designate a particular bag for each use. Tote a smaller bag to put into your larger reusable grocery bag for small produce or a package of meat. You can add a label to your bags so baggers at your local market will know which bag you use for which items.
2. Laundry, look elsewhere. Try to avoid using your reusable grocery bags as a bag for laundry or gym clothes – those should have their own spot in your car – preferably in a machine-washable bag.
3. Clean and store them properly. When you get home, or at the end of the week, wash your reusable bags with soap and warm water. Wipe them dry and let them air out to ensure all the moisture has evaporated. Some people recommend hanging a small clothesline or hooks in your mud room or near your back door so the bags can air out properly.
